Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi D.O.C. is produced in the Marche region, on the hills surrounding the town of Jesi, straddling the provinces of Ancona and Macerata. The production area spans some twenty municipalities on either side of the Esino valley, open toward the Adriatic, which gave these lands their historical name of Castelli. The vineyards grow on clay-limestone soils, rich in calcium carbonate, typical of the rolling sub-Apennine landscape. The Mediterranean climate, softened by the sea's proximity, sets the area apart from neighbouring Matelica, whose vineyards lie in a more inland, continental valley separated from the Castelli di Jesi by the Monte San Vicino massif. Verdicchio accounts for at least 85% of the blend, complemented where relevant by other white varieties authorised in the Marche region.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi comes in several styles: a dry white, a Superiore made from lower yields and therefore more concentrated, a sparkling Spumante, and a Passito made from dried grapes. The classic style shows a pale straw-yellow colour with greenish highlights, a delicate nose of apple, peach and white flowers, and a dry, harmonious palate with a characteristic almond-like bitter note on the finish. The Superiore gains in structure and aromatic intensity. The Spumante offers a fine, persistent mousse, a saline freshness and mineral notes. The Passito, made after prolonged natural drying of the grapes, develops aromas of dried apricot, quince and honey. The dry styles pair readily with raw fish, shellfish, seafood pasta and white meats such as rabbit; the Passito suits fruit-based desserts and matured cheeses.
