Denominacion de Origen

The Denominación de Origen Valencia lies inland from the province of Valencia, on Spain's eastern coast, and comprises four distinct subzones: Alto Turia, Valentino, Moscatel de Valencia and Clariano. The soils are brown and calcareous, with poorly developed humus and a silty-sandy texture. The climate, moderated by the nearby Mediterranean, combines mild winters with long, dry, hot summers, a marked thermal range and abundant sunshine. A wide range of grape varieties is authorized: among the whites, macabeo, merseguera, moscatel de Alejandría, moscatel de grano menudo, alarije (also known as malvasía riojana) and verdil; among the reds, bobal, monastrell, tempranillo, garnacha tinta and garnacha tintorera. Each subzone keeps its own identity: wines may only carry a subzone's name if made exclusively from grapes harvested there, otherwise they are sold simply as Valencia.

Grape varieties: Vins rouges : bobal, monastrell, tempranillo, grenache noir. Vins blancs : moscatel, merseguera

The wines of this appellation

Valencia produces a wide range of wines: white, rosé, red, liqueur wines, quality aromatic sparkling wines and semi-sparkling wines. Whites, in straw to golden hues, show a clean nose dominated by fruit, good acidity and a fresh, lingering palate. Rosés, with raspberry, strawberry or redcurrant highlights, share this frank, fruity profile. Reds, deep-coloured with violet or garnet reflections, stand out for their marked aromatic and colour intensity, a full, structured palate and firm balance; when aged in oak, they gain complexity and length. The traditional liqueur wine, made from moscatel de Alejandría, develops intense aromas of orange blossom and white flowers, with a sweet, generous palate and a long finish. The aromatic sparkling and semi-sparkling wines are marked by lightness, fruity freshness and balance. These wines pair with tapas and grilled fish for the whites and rosés, with braised meats for the reds, while the liqueur wine suits desserts and pastries.
