Denominacion de Origen

The Alicante appellation lies in the province of the same name, on the Mediterranean coast of the Valencian Community, Spain. Its vineyards are divided between two contrasting areas: to the north, the coastal Marina zone, tempered by the sea and particularly suited to Moscatel de Alejandría; to the south and further inland, the more continental Vinalopó valley, with hot summers and cooler winters, home to Monastrell. Soils are mostly calcareous and sedimentary on the hillsides, becoming sandier and poorer in organic matter in the Vinalopó valley. Monastrell is the appellation's benchmark red variety, alongside Garnacha Tintorera and Bobal; international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are also permitted. White varieties also include Malvasía, Merseguera and Verdil. This contrast between coast and interior shapes markedly different wine styles within a single appellation.

The wines of this appellation

The appellation produces red, white, rosé and sweet wines. Reds, mostly based on Monastrell, show a deep colour, aromas of ripe dark fruit, garrigue herbs and spice, a full body and present tannins; international varieties sometimes bring extra freshness and complexity. Whites made from Moscatel de Alejandría are aromatic, floral and fruity, while those based on Merseguera or Verdil are brighter and more mineral. Rosés are fruity and easy to drink. The appellation is also known for mistela, a traditional sweet wine obtained by mutage of Moscatel, and above all for Fondillón, a traditional wine style specific to the appellation, made from over-ripened Monastrell, naturally fermented without any added alcohol and long aged in barrel, developing aromas of dried fruit, roasted notes and spice. Full-bodied reds pair with grilled meats and stews, aromatic whites suit fish and seafood, and Fondillón is enjoyed with dry desserts or aged cheeses.
