Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G. is produced in the hills of the province of Treviso, in the Veneto region, between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. The production zone spans fifteen communes and covers around 8,700 hectares of vineyard, planted between 100 and 500 metres above sea level on south-facing slopes. The soils, of marine and glacial origin, combine sandstone, marl, clay and morainic deposits, giving rise to considerable terroir diversity from one commune to the next. This landscape of steep hills, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, sets the appellation apart from the flatter, larger Prosecco D.O.C. plain. Glera, present at a minimum of 85%, forms the base of the wine and may be complemented by up to 15% of verdiso, bianchetta trevigiana, perera and glera lunga.

The wines of this appellation

Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore D.O.C.G. is above all a sparkling wine, made in sealed tanks using the Charmat method, with a pale straw-yellow colour and fine, persistent bubbles. Its bouquet recalls apple, pear, citrus fruit and white flowers, with riper notes of peach and apricot in wines from the most favourably exposed sites. On the palate it is fresh, light and lively, with an acidity that carries the aromas; dosage ranges from extra brut to dry, taking in brut and extra dry along the way. The appellation also produces, in smaller volumes, frizzante versions with gentler bubbles and occasional still wines. The finest plots yield Rive, vintage-dated wines from a single commune, and Cartizze, from a small area prized for its aromatic finesse. These wines are enjoyed as an aperitif, but also pair with antipasti, shellfish, light fish dishes and sushi.
