Indicazione geografica tipica

The Umbria IGT designation covers the entire provinces of Perugia and Terni, that is, the whole territory of the Umbria region in central Italy. Umbria is the only region of the Italian peninsula that borders neither the sea nor a foreign country: a landscape of hills and low mountains shaped by the Tiber valley, bordered to the east by the first foothills of the Umbrian-Marchigian Apennines. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and warm, dry summers in the valleys, tempered by altitude on the higher ground. Umbria IGT wines may be produced, alone or blended, from any grape variety of the appropriate colour deemed suitable for cultivation in the region and listed in the national register of vine varieties, with the possibility of naming one or two varieties on the label. This wide-ranging designation therefore spans a large and varied territory, from the shores of Lake Trasimeno to the hills surrounding Orvieto.

The wines of this appellation

Umbria IGT allows the production of white, red and rosé wines, also made in frizzante (lightly sparkling), passito (from semi-dried grapes) and novello styles. The whites show a straw-yellow colour, a floral and fruity nose, and a fresh, savoury palate ranging from dry to off-dry depending on the cuvée. The reds, ruby red in colour, offer fruity and spicy aromas carried by a marked tannic structure and good body. The rosés, cherry-pink in hue, display a floral and fruity profile with a fresh, lightly tannic palate. Given the wide range of permitted grape varieties across such an extensive territory, styles vary considerably from one producer to another. The whites pair well with antipasti, fish and fresh cheeses; the rosés suit cold cuts and summer dishes; the fuller-bodied reds go well with red meats, pasta in sauce and aged cheeses.
