AOC Touraine Chenonceaux wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

Touraine Chenonceaux is a complementary geographical denomination of the Touraine appellation, reserved for white and red wines. Its production area covers 26 communes across the Indre-et-Loire and Loir-et-Cher departments, on the slopes of both banks of the Cher, in the downstream part of the valley, around the Château de Chenonceau. The plots are marked by a significant presence of flint, which favours heat exchange in the soil and grape ripening on these exposed slopes. The climate is oceanic, as across the wider Touraine vineyard. Only two grape varieties are permitted: sauvignon for the whites, and côt, the main variety for the reds, complemented by cabernet franc. This narrow varietal base, specific to Chenonceaux, sets it apart from the other complementary geographical denominations of Touraine, which are generally built around chenin or gamay.

The wines of this appellation

Touraine Chenonceaux produces white and red wines. The whites, made solely from sauvignon, show an intense aromatic palette, floral (hawthorn, acacia) and fruity (citrus, dried fruit); extended ageing before release gives them roundness and finesse. The reds, built on côt complemented by cabernet franc, show a fine tannic structure and a fairly intense aromatic palette dominated by black fruit; their longer ageing gives round, silky tannins and a complex aromatic profile, suggesting good ageing potential. The whites pair well with river fish, shellfish or fresh goat's cheese. The fuller-bodied reds go well with red meat, feathered game or matured cheeses.
