Terra Alta D.O. spans 12 municipalities in the comarca of the same name, in southern Catalonia, between the Ebro river and the Matarranya area on the border with Aragón. The vineyards are planted between 350 and 550 metres above sea level, on medium-textured, well-drained soils that are rich in limestone and low in organic matter. The climate is Mediterranean with continental influence, marked by sharp temperature swings and annual rainfall of 350 to 450 millimetres; northwesterly and southeasterly winds help moderate conditions during the growing season. The recommended white varieties are Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo, complemented by Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Parellada and Viognier. Among red varieties, Garnacha Negra, Garnacha Peluda and Cariñena lead, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tempranillo. Terra Alta alone accounts for about a third of the world's Garnacha Blanca plantings.

Terra Alta produces white, red and rosé wines, as well as liqueur wines. The whites, made mostly from Garnacha Blanca, are pale in colour and built around freshness and balance; some, locally known as 'brisats', are vinified like reds to gain extra structure. The reds show a Mediterranean character, with intense colour, ripe fruit aromas and firm tannic structure. Rosés round out the range in a fresh, fruity style. The appellation also produces liqueur wines: naturally sweet wines, white and red mistelas, and oxidatively aged rancio wines rooted in local tradition. The whites pair well with fish, shellfish and fresh goat cheese; the reds suit grilled meats, stews and game, while the rancio wines are best enjoyed at the end of a meal, on their own or with dry desserts.
