AOC Saumur Champigny wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

the appellation embraces nine villages, centred on the Loire, the Thouet and the Vienne. The soils are calcareous clay and the vines enjoy plentiful sunshine (in Latin, Champigny means ‘fields of fire’) on the characteristic white earth formed of ‘tuffeau’ limestone (Turonian chalk). The area is home to three red varietals: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pineau d’Aunis.

Grape varieties: Vins rouges : cabernet franc, cabernet-sauvignon, pineau d'Aunis

The wines of this appellation

Saumur-Champigny produces well-balanced, velvety wines which are relatively robust and full. With their elegant tannins though they can be drunk young. They have a deep ruby-red hue and exude fragrances of red and black fruit such as raspberry, red currant, blackberry and blackcurrant, soot and humus. As they mature, they take on spicy tones (pepper), tobacco and liquorice. The younger wines pair with red meat (beef fillet), grilled fish and soft cheeses, whilst the older examples match with poultry, rabbit, lamb and game.
