Denominacion de Origen
The Ribera del Duero appellation runs along the Duero river valley in Castile and León, across a strip roughly 115 kilometres long and 35 kilometres wide. It covers around a hundred municipalities spread across four provinces: Burgos, Soria, Segovia and Valladolid. The vineyards are planted at altitude, between 720 and over 1,000 metres above sea level. The soils, of tertiary origin, alternate between three types of terrain: clay, limestone and stony ground, often layered in silty sands and calcareous bands. The climate is continental with Mediterranean influence, marked by harsh winters, hot summers and wide day-to-night temperature swings, under generous sunshine and limited rainfall. Tempranillo, known locally as tinta del país or tinto fino, dominates the red plantings by far, complemented by cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec and garnacha tinta. Albillo mayor is the only authorised white variety.

Ribera del Duero produces mostly red wines, along with some rosés and, more recently, whites made from albillo mayor. The reds show a deep garnet colour, at times almost black in young wines. The nose recalls ripe black and red fruit, plum and cherry, joined by spicy, toasted and vanilla notes when the wine has aged in barrel. On the palate these are structured wines with firm tannins and good acidity, giving them real aging potential. Over time the aromas shift toward leather, tobacco, undergrowth and sweet spice. The rosés, made from red varieties, show a bright pink colour and a fresh red-fruit character. These wines traditionally accompany lechazo, the region's iconic roast milk-fed lamb, but pair just as well with grilled red meats, game and matured cheeses.
