Denominacion de Origen
The Rías Baixas D.O. lies in Galicia, across the provinces of Pontevedra and A Coruña, close to the Atlantic and along the lower courses of the Ulla, Umia, Oitavén, Xabriña and Miño rivers. It is divided into five subzones: Val do Salnés, Condado do Tea, O Rosal, Soutomaior and Ribeira do Ulla. The climate is markedly Atlantic, with mild temperatures and abundant rainfall throughout the year that drops sharply in summer. Soils rest mainly on a granite bedrock, with schist and quaternary alluvial deposits in some areas; these are poor, sandy and acidic soils. The white variety Albariño dominates the vineyard by far, alongside Treixadura, Loureira, Caíño blanco, Torrontés, Godello and Ratiño gallega. A handful of red varieties are also authorized: Caíño tinto, Espadeiro, Loureiro tinto, Sousón, Mencía, Brancellao, Pedral and Castañal. Vines are traditionally trained overhead on pergolas to limit fungal disease linked to the region's high humidity.

Rías Baixas D.O. produces mostly still white wines, with red wines remaining a minority, complemented by a few quality sparkling wines. Wines made from Albariño show a pale straw-yellow colour with golden or greenish hints, clean and bright. The nose, of medium to high intensity, reveals great aromatic complexity dominated by citrus, floral and fruity notes, with apple standing out. On the palate the acidity is light, the structure good, the unctuousness medium and the finish persistent, closing on floral and fruity notes; they are best enjoyed young, for their freshness. Oak-aged versions turn a deeper golden colour and gain toasted, smoky, vanilla and dried-fruit notes from the wood, with more potential to evolve over time. The red wines, cherry-red with violet hues, show red-fruit and vegetal notes, with a light structure and moderate tannins. The whites pair with fish and shellfish, the oak-aged styles with sauced fish or poultry, and the reds with white meats.
