Priorat D.O.Q. lies in Catalonia, in the province of Tarragona, on a territory dominated by the Montsant massif and crossed by the Siurana river basin. The appellation covers nine municipalities in full — Bellmunt del Priorat, Gratallops, el Lloar, la Morera de Montsant, Poboleda, Porrera, Torroja del Priorat, la Vilella Alta and la Vilella Baixa — plus part of Falset and el Molar, over a planted area of around 2,200 hectares. The steep terrain requires terraced vineyards. The soils are formed of roughly 90% llicorella, a dark, nutrient-poor, well-draining slate that encourages deep rooting. The Mediterranean climate, with mild winters marked by occasional frost and dry summers, is tempered by the slate, which stores the day's heat. The recommended varieties are Grenache and Carignan, complemented by Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and white varieties such as White Grenache and Macabeo. The appellation is surrounded by the D.O. Montsant, where clay-limestone soils, very different from llicorella, predominate.

The wines of this appellation

Priorat D.O.Q. produces mostly red wines, alongside a share of white wines and, more rarely, rosés. The reds, based mainly on a Grenache-Carignan blend complemented in some estates by Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, show a deep colour and complex, full aromas with elegant notes. Their tannic structure, built on the ripeness that the llicorella's heat retention allows, gives them good aging potential. The whites, made notably from White Grenache and Macabeo, aim for a balance between fruit and aromatics. These powerful, structured wines pair well with dishes of character: grilled or braised red meats, game, and slow-cooked stews. The more mature reds go well with aged cheeses, such as Manchego or Catalan Garrotxa.
