Vinho Regional

The Península de Setúbal lies south of Lisbon, between the estuaries of the Tagus and Sado rivers, on Portugal's Atlantic coast. This regional appellation covers the whole of the Setúbal district and spans two contrasting landscapes: to the south, the limestone hills of the Serra da Arrábida, rising between 100 and 500 metres and cut by valleys and slopes; to the north and east, a broad sandy plain bordering the Sado river. Soils are heterogeneous, ranging from deep fine sands on the plains to limestone and clay-limestone on the higher ground of the Arrábida. The climate blends Mediterranean and subtropical influences, moderated by the nearby ocean and estuaries, with limited thermal swings. The appellation permits a wide range of Portuguese and international grape varieties: reds include Castelão, Aragonez, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; whites include Arinto, Fernão Pires and Moscatel. This varietal openness sets it apart from the stricter Palmela and Setúbal designations of origin within its territory.

The wines of this appellation

Península de Setúbal produces red, white and rosé wines, as well as sweet fortified wines based on Moscatel. The reds, made from Castelão, Aragonez or international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, show good structure, present tannins and aromas of dark fruit, spice and scrubland herbs; barrel-aged examples gain complexity and can be cellared. The whites, often based on Arinto or Fernão Pires, are lively and fresh, with citrus and orchard-fruit notes, best enjoyed young. The Moscatel wines, sweet and aromatic, develop notes of orange blossom, honey and candied fruit, with good ageing potential. The reds pair well with grilled meats, game and mature cheeses; the whites suit fish, shellfish and lighter dishes; the Moscatels are best served at the end of a meal, with desserts or dried-fruit pastries.
