Indication géographique protégée

The Península de Setúbal protected geographical indication covers the thirteen municipalities of the Setúbal district, between the Tagus estuary, the Sado river and the Atlantic Ocean, south of Lisbon. The vineyard is concentrated mainly in the municipalities of Palmela, Montijo, Setúbal, Grândola and Alcácer do Sal. Two contrasting landscapes make up the region: wide plains with poor, well-drained sandy soils, and the heights of the Serra da Arrábida, with clay-limestone soils sheltered from Atlantic winds. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, softened by the ocean's proximity. The dominant traditional grape varieties are Castelão and Trincadeira for red wines, and Fernão Pires, Arinto and Moscatel Graúdo for white wines. Broader in scope and less restrictive than the Palmela and Setúbal denominations of origin it encompasses, Península de Setúbal allows a wider range of grape varieties.

The wines of this appellation

Península de Setúbal produces red, white, rosé and sparkling wines. The reds, made from Castelão and Trincadeira, show discreet notes of spice and wild fruit; they are usually drunk within their first years, while their fruit is still fresh. The whites, dominated by Fernão Pires, show moderate acidity and a delicate perfume, while those made from Arinto bring extra freshness. Wines made from Moscatel Graúdo stand out for their exuberant, floral and fruity aromatics. These are everyday wines, meant to be enjoyed young rather than cellared. Whites and rosés pair well with grilled fish, seafood and light summer dishes, while the reds suit white meats, grilled dishes and charcuterie.
