Indicazione geografica tipica

The Marche IGT designation covers the entire administrative territory of the region, comprising the five provinces of Ancona, Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata and Pesaro e Urbino. The area stretches between the foothills of the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea, across a largely hilly landscape cut by several river valleys running toward the coast. Inland soils are marked by limestone and clay, becoming sandier and more alluvial closer to the shore. The climate is Mediterranean, tempered by the Apennine relief and by breezes off the Adriatic, and varies noticeably from one valley to another. This designation differs from the region's narrower appellations by covering the whole of the Marche and by allowing a wide range of grape varieties, both Italian and international, including sangiovese, barbera, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah for red wines, and chardonnay, sauvignon, trebbiano toscano, pinot grigio and riesling for white wines.

The wines of this appellation

Under this designation, white, red and rosé wines are produced in still, frizzante and sparkling versions, alongside sweet wines made from dried grapes and young wines meant to be drunk within the year. The wide range of permitted grape varieties, combining international and Italian cultivars, accounts for the diversity of styles. Whites, often made from chardonnay, sauvignon, trebbiano toscano or pinot grigio, are fresh and fruity, with floral notes and good acidity; they are best enjoyed young. Reds, made notably from sangiovese, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, syrah or barbera, show fruity character and tannins ranging from soft to firm; the most structured examples can be aged for a few years. Rosés, lighter in style, are meant for early drinking. White and rosé wines pair well with seafood and local starters, reds suit meat dishes and stews, and the dried-grape wines match well with desserts.
