Ward

Elgin is a high-lying valley within the Cape South Coast wine region of the Western Cape, about 70 kilometres east of Cape Town. Ringed by the Hottentots Holland mountains, which form a natural bowl, the area was long devoted to apple orchards before vines took hold. Vineyards are planted between 300 and 500 metres above sea level, on soils derived from Table Mountain sandstone and Bokkeveld shale. Its elevation, proximity to the ocean and frequent cloud cover during the ripening season make it one of the coolest wine-growing areas in South Africa, with a marked gap between day and night temperatures. This cooler climate, more pronounced than elsewhere in the province, sets Elgin apart from the warmer vineyards further inland. Sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and riesling are the leading white varieties, while pinot noir and syrah are the most widely planted black grapes.

The wines of this appellation

Elgin produces mainly white wines shaped by its cool climate: sauvignon blanc develops citrus and white-fleshed fruit aromas with lively acidity, while chardonnay, fuller in body, keeps a fine mineral tension and can age for several years. Riesling yields taut wines with floral and citrus notes. Among the reds, pinot noir stands out for its elegance, fine tannins and red-fruit aromas, while syrah gives more structured, spicy, peppery wines. Elgin wines as a whole are marked by a freshness and acid balance rarely matched elsewhere in the province, with moderate alcohol levels. The whites pair readily with seafood, fish and goat cheese, while pinot noir suits poultry and mushroom dishes, and syrah goes with grilled red meats.
