A.O.C./A.O.P.

The Crémant d'Alsace appellation covers the entire Alsace winegrowing area, on the eastern slopes of the Vosges foothills, running from around Marlenheim, near Strasbourg, to Thann, near Mulhouse, with a further enclave near Cleebourg to the north. The vineyard forms a narrow strip stretching some 120 kilometres, mostly planted between 200 and 400 metres in altitude. Shaped by the collapse of the Rhine graben, the soils are highly varied: acidic brown soils on schist, granite or sandstone on the Vosges side, sandy-gravelly soils at the edge of the plain, and calcareous brown and marl soils on the sub-Vosges hills. The Vosges massif shields the vineyard from oceanic influences, giving it a dry, semi-continental climate, high sunshine levels and low rainfall. Six grape varieties are authorised for white wines: auxerrois, chardonnay, pinot blanc, pinot gris, pinot noir and riesling; rosé is made exclusively from pinot noir. Unlike the Alsace and Alsace Grand Cru appellations, reserved for still wines, Crémant d'Alsace is dedicated to sparkling wines made using the traditional method.

Grape varieties: Vins effervescent : Riesling, Pinot blanc, Pinot noir, Pinot gris, Auxerrois, Chardonnay

The wines of this appellation

Crémant d'Alsace produces white and rosé sparkling wines made using the traditional method, with a second fermentation in bottle and a minimum of nine months' ageing on lees before disgorgement. White wines range in colour from pale yellow with green tints to golden yellow; rosés show a transparent pink hue of variable intensity. Their structure is built on pronounced natural acidity, giving freshness and finesse, paired with fruity aromas. When lees ageing extends beyond the regulatory minimum, riper, buttery or toasted-bread notes emerge, while the mousse remains fine and light. The great majority of wines are released in the brut category. Thanks to their freshness and light structure, the white wines suit aperitifs, starters, fish and shellfish; the fruitier rosés also pair well with charcuterie and lightly sweetened desserts.
