The Alsace appellation covers 119 communes, stretched along the eastern foothills of the Vosges mountains from Wissembourg in the north to Thann in the south, across the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin departments. The Vosges massif shields the vineyards from oceanic rainfall, giving the region a semi-continental climate with cold winters and hot, dry summers. The soils form one of France's most varied geological mosaics: granite, schist, sandstone, limestone, marl and clay-limestone often alternate within a single commune. Alsace muscat is made from muscat blanc à petits grains and muscat ottonel, with a marginal contribution from muscat rosé à petits grains. It is one of the region's four noble grape varieties, alongside riesling, gewurztraminer and pinot gris, the only varieties permitted for late-harvest wines and grand cru production. A minority variety, it accounts for about 2% of the Alsace vineyard.

Alsace muscat is a dry white wine, setting it apart from most other French muscats, which are usually off-dry or sweet. Its color is pale yellow with green highlights. The nose shows an intense bouquet of fresh grapes and white flower notes, sometimes lifted by white peach or lychee. On the palate it offers a lively attack, a clean texture and an aromatic freshness reminiscent of the grape itself. Blends of muscat blanc à petits grains, which brings aromatic intensity and acidity, and muscat ottonel, finer and earlier-ripening, produce varied balances depending on the estate. These are wines of immediate pleasure, best enjoyed in their first few years to preserve their aromatic brightness. They are traditionally served as an aperitif and pair with asparagus, grilled fish, vegetable dishes and steamed preparations.
