AOC Côtes de Bordeaux wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

The Côtes de Bordeaux regional appellation brings together five historic terroirs of the Bordeaux vineyard under a single name: Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon, Francs and Sainte-Foy. It stretches across the Gironde department, on hillsides overlooking the Gironde estuary, the Garonne and the Dordogne; each of these terroirs may also be claimed under its own geographical denomination. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, with gravelly and sandy areas depending on the sector. The vines, planted on these hillsides, benefit from south and south-west exposures, a temperate oceanic climate and good sunshine. Four red grape varieties are grown here: merlot, the leading variety, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and malbec, also known as cot.

The wines of this appellation

Under this name, without a further geographical designation, the appellation produces red wines only. Merlot, the main variety, gives roundness and suppleness; cabernet sauvignon brings structure and power; cabernet franc adds elegance, and malbec a touch of spice. The wines show a deep colour, aromas of ripe dark fruit, and tannins that are supple and well integrated. They are both structured and round, pleasant to drink relatively young while also offering an ageing potential of three to seven years. Their balance of body and fruit makes them versatile at the table: they pair well with red and white meats, game, slow-cooked or spiced dishes, and matured cheeses.
