AOC Coteaux du Layon wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

The Coteaux du Layon appellation spans 27 communes in Maine-et-Loire, south of Angers, along the Layon river, a tributary of the Loire. The vineyard sits on steep hillsides cut into the schist bedrock of the Armorican Massif, typical of the 'Anjou noir' district. The Mauges plateau to the west shields the area from Atlantic rainfall, while morning mists forming along the river encourage noble rot on the grapes. Only one grape variety is permitted, chenin, known locally as pineau de la Loire. Harvesting is carried out through successive selective picks, gathering bunches affected by noble rot or left to overripen. Within the appellation, six communes are allowed to attach their name to Coteaux du Layon, and the Chaume hillside forms a separate premier cru with its own appellation status.

The wines of this appellation

Coteaux du Layon produces exclusively sweet to lusciously sweet white wines, made from botrytised or overripe grapes. Their colour ranges from golden yellow with green highlights when young to amber gold with age. The nose shows white flowers, candied fruit, honey, apricot and sometimes spice. On the palate, the wine's richness is balanced by a vein of acidity that keeps it fresh rather than heavy despite its sugar concentration. These are wines built to age, capable of developing favourably over several decades and gaining aromatic complexity over time. Young, they pair well with foie gras, blue-veined cheeses or a stone-fruit tart. More mature examples suit desserts with dried fruit, caramel-based pastries, or can be enjoyed on their own as a meditative aperitif.
