The Costers del Segre appellation lies in the province of Lleida, in Catalonia, along the middle course of the river Segre, between the Pyrenees and the Ebro basin. It is made up of seven contrasting sub-zones: Artesa de Segre, Urgell, Garrigues, Pallars, Raimat, Segrià and Valls del Riu Corb. The vines, planted between 200 and 1,100 metres above sea level, grow on calcareous and/or clay soils low in organic matter. The climate is continental and dry, shielded from maritime influence, marked by high sunshine hours, scarce rainfall and wide day-to-night temperature swings. The northernmost sub-zones, Artesa de Segre and Pallars, feel a Pyrenean influence, while the southern part of the appellation lies under Mediterranean influence. Alongside native varieties such as macabeo, xarel·lo and parellada grow later-introduced grapes like chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah — Costers del Segre having been the first Catalan region to acclimatise these international varieties next to its local ones.

Costers del Segre produces white, rosé and red wines, as well as sparkling wines made by the traditional method. The whites, made from macabeo, xarel·lo, parellada or chardonnay, show marked acidity and floral or fruity aromas, more direct and fruit-forward in the gentler-relief sub-zones and more floral at higher altitude. The reds, built mainly around tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah, benefit from the sharp night-time temperature drops that preserve acidity and concentrate aroma; they come across as structured, with present tannins and good body. Sparkling wines, a local tradition dating back to the early twentieth century in some cellars, offer fine bubbles over a fruity or floral base. The whites and sparkling wines pair well with shellfish and fish, the rosés with light grilled dishes, while the structured reds suit red meat, game and mature cheeses.
