DOC Cannonau di Sardegna D.O.C. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Denominazione di Origine Controllata

The Cannonau di Sardegna appellation covers the entire island of Sardinia, encompassing several recognized geographical sub-zones: Oliena (or Nepente di Oliena), Capo Ferrato and Jerzu, along with a Classico designation reserved for vineyards in the provinces of Nuoro and Ogliastra. Soils vary by area — granite, schist, basalt or limestone — and are generally well-drained, as waterlogged land is excluded from production. The Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, dry summers, gives the vines generous sunshine. The Cannonau grape, ampelographically identical to Grenache noir (Garnacha), forms the backbone of the appellation: it must account for at least 85 percent of the blend, rising to 90 percent for the Classico designation, with the remainder drawn from other black grape varieties recommended or authorized in Sardinia. This island-wide reach, spanning coastal areas and inland hills, sets Cannonau di Sardegna apart from more localized Sardinian denominations built around a single terroir or grape variety.

The wines of this appellation

Cannonau di Sardegna comes in several styles. The rosso shows a ruby robe turning orange or garnet with age, a nose of ripe red and black fruit — cherry, myrtle, plum — lifted by peppery spice notes, with a savory, lightly tannic palate. The rosato is a bright pink wine with floral and cherry aromas and a dry, savory palate. The riserva designation requires at least two years of ageing, part of it in oak or chestnut barrels: the color leans toward garnet, the nose turns to dried rose petal, jammy fruit, prune and sweet spice over a balsamic background, while the palate becomes full, warm and smooth with a lightly tannic finish. There is also a passito, made from dried grapes, sweet and velvety, and a liquoroso, dry or sweet, with a round texture. These wines pair well with roasted meats, game and aged sheep's milk cheese; the rosato suits cold cuts, while the passito and liquoroso go well with desserts.
