AOC Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

The appellation lies on the right bank of the Gironde estuary, around forty kilometres north of Bordeaux, facing the Médoc. It covers some forty communes centred on Blaye, Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde and Saint-Savin. Soils are varied: clay-limestone around the town of Blaye, clay-gravel and silica-clay soils on the inland plateau, and sandy-gravel soils to the north. The climate is temperate, shaped by maritime influence, with favourable sunshine for the vines. Red plantings rely mainly on merlot, complemented by cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and malbec; white plantings are based on sauvignon, sémillon and muscadelle. Among the five geographical denominations of Côtes de Bordeaux, Blaye stands out for its position along the estuary, facing the Médoc vineyards, and for producing dry white wines alongside reds, a feature it shares with the Francs and Sainte-Foy denominations.

The wines of this appellation

Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux produces mostly red wines, alongside a small proportion of dry whites. The reds, built around merlot, show a deep purple colour and aromas of ripe red and black fruit with spicy notes. Tannins are supple, the style rounded and generous, and the more structured cuvées have a good aptitude for a few years of ageing. They pair well with red meats, roasted poultry, braised dishes and mature cheeses. The dry whites, led by sauvignon, stand out for their freshness and aromas of citrus and exotic fruit; best enjoyed young, they suit shellfish, grilled fish and light starters.
