AOC Blaye wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

The Blaye wine region is situated along the right bank of the Gironde, opposite Margaux, fifty or so kilometres north-west of Bordeaux. The vines extend over a large swathe of land, roughly 7,800 hectares in size, four-fifths of which are planted to red varietals. However, basic red wine production is constantly on the wane in favour of the Premières Côtes de Blaye appellation, made to stricter standards.

The wines of this appellation

The red wines are relatively supple with a bouquet of spices, prunes, and ripe fruits potentially developing into musky notes with age. As they mature, their hue turns brick-red. The pale-yellow coloured white wines are lively though delicate on the palate. They reward early drinking.
