A.O.C./A.O.P.

Sylvaner is grown within the Alsace vineyard, which spans 119 communes across the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin départements, on the eastern foothills of the Vosges mountains, stretching from Marlenheim in the north to Thann in the south. The Vosges massif shields the vineyard from oceanic influences, giving it a dry, sunny, semi-continental climate with low rainfall. The soils, shaped by the collapse of the Rhine rift valley, are highly varied: acidic brown soils on schist, granite or sandstone along the Vosges foothills, colluvial and alluvial sandy-gravelly soils on the plain, and calcareous brown or rendzina-type soils on the sub-Vosges hills. Grown in Alsace for centuries, sylvaner is one of the grape varieties that shaped the vineyard's aromatic identity; it is also the sole variety underpinning two of the appellation's supplementary geographic denominations, Blienschwiller and Côtes de Barr, both located in the Bas-Rhin.

The wines of this appellation

Sylvaner produces dry white wines with a pale color tinged with green highlights, sometimes turning golden on the best-exposed sites. The nose, of medium intensity, combines floral notes (white flowers, acacia) with citrus touches and a hint of freshly cut grass. On the palate, the wine is direct, light and lively, carried by a taut, ripe acidity that places it among the dry, mineral white wines of the Alsace vineyard. It is most often enjoyed within two to three years of harvest, when its freshness is at its best; cuvées from well-exposed slopes can develop mineral notes with a little more time. This refreshing profile pairs well with charcuterie, onion tart, flammekueche, seafood and oysters, as well as salads and raw vegetables.
