AOC Alsace riesling wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

The Alsace riesling appellation lies within the Alsace vineyard, one of the northernmost in France and Europe, planted along the eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains, across the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin departments. The vineyard stretches for around 120 kilometres, from Cleebourg in the north to Thann, near Mulhouse, in the south. The vines grow on hillsides generally between 200 and 400 metres in altitude. The Vosges massif shelters the vineyard from oceanic influences, giving it a semi-continental climate marked by strong sunshine, moderate rainfall, hot dry summers and favourable late-season conditions for slow grape ripening. The soils show wide geological diversity: acidic brown soils on granite, schist or sandstone along the Vosges foothills, and limestone or marl soils on the sub-Vosges hills. Riesling, one of the region's signature grape varieties, is planted across these varied soils, with a particular affinity for granitic and schistous ground that heightens its natural freshness. Wines labelled "Riesling" are produced exclusively from this single grape variety, vinified as white wine.

The wines of this appellation

The appellation produces exclusively still, dry white wines with a pale, bright colour. Riesling stands out for its lively acidity and intense aromatic expression: citrus fruit such as lemon and grapefruit, white flowers such as linden blossom, and mineral flint notes that become more pronounced as the wine ages. On the palate, freshness dominates, carried by good body and a long finish often underlined by a light saline tension. These wines have long been recognised for their ageing potential, gaining aromatic complexity over the years. They pair well with seafood, fish such as sole or trout, sauced poultry dishes like coq au riesling, game such as hare civet, or richer dishes such as gratin dauphinois.
