The Alpes-de-Haute-Provence appellation covers the entire department of the same name, in southeastern France, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. This landscape of contrasting relief runs from the Durance valley and its dry, sun-drenched plateaus up to the foothills of the Ubaye massif. Shielded from cold winds by the Alpine range and ventilated by a gentle southerly airflow, it ranks among the least windy areas of Provence. Soils are highly varied, combining sandy molasse, sandstone limestone, silty clay and calcareous conglomerate, all naturally well drained. Vines are planted mainly on sun-facing valley slopes and on the plain of the Durance corridor. The range of authorised grape varieties is broad, dominated in practice by grenache, syrah and cinsault for blended wines, complemented by varietal wines made from cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, viognier, chardonnay, sauvignon and muscat à petits grains.

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence produces still red, rosé and white wines, with red and rosé dominating output. The reds, mainly blends of grenache, syrah and cinsault, range from round and easy-drinking to wines built on fine tannic structure and good acidity that give them a capacity for medium-term ageing. The rosés, made by saignée or direct pressing, stand out for their very fruity, easy-drinking and pleasantly tangy profiles. The whites, made from viognier, chardonnay, sauvignon or muscat à petits grains, show strong, complex aromatic intensity carried by a fresh palate. These balances owe much to the marked day-night temperature swings of summer. At the table, the reds pair well with local specialities such as Sisteron lamb or Banon cheese, while the rosés and whites suit light Provençal cuisine and grilled fish.
