IGP Alentejo I.G.P. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Indication géographique protégée

Alentejo I.G.P., or Vinho Regional Alentejano, covers the wine-growing area of southern Portugal spread across the districts of Portalegre, Évora and Beja, a wider territory than that of the Alentejo DOC, which is limited to eight classified sub-regions. Soils are heterogeneous, combining clay, schist, granite, rolled stone and limestone depending on the sector. The climate is Mediterranean with a strong continental influence, marked by hot, dry summers. This geographical indication stands out for its more flexible varietal rules than the DOC: producers may blend traditional Alentejo varieties such as Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Antão Vaz or Arinto with international varieties, encouraging innovation and vineyards planted beyond the eight classified sub-regions.

The wines of this appellation

Alentejo I.G.P. produces red, white and rosé wines. Reds, made mainly from Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Castelão or Syrah, show a deep colour, a full, velvety palate, ripe tannins and aromas of ripe red and black fruit. Some are aged in barrel, which adds toasted and spiced notes. Whites, produced notably from Antão Vaz, Arinto or Roupeiro, are supple with moderate acidity and aromas of citrus, stone fruit and sometimes tropical fruit. Rosés complete the range with a fresh, fruity profile. The more structured reds pair well with red and grilled meats and matured cheeses, while whites and rosés suit fish, seafood and lighter dishes.
