Western Cape wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Western Cape is the broadest geographical unit in South Africa's Wine of Origin system; it corresponds to the province of the same name and accounts for the great majority of the country's vineyards. It brings together strikingly different areas, from the Coastal Region around Cape Town to the Breede River Valley, the Klein Karoo and the Olifants River, spanning the Atlantic coastline to the inland valleys. The climate is Mediterranean in character, tempered by currents from both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and by the prevailing southeasterly wind known as the Cape Doctor, with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Soils combine granite, Malmesbury shale and Table Mountain sandstone on the slopes, with alluvial and loam deposits along the Breede, Berg and Olifants rivers. This vast extent explains the range of grape varieties grown: chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and semillon among the whites; cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot, cinsault, pinot noir and pinotage among the reds.

The wines of this appellation

Across such a vast area, styles vary considerably from the cool coastline to the warmer inland valleys. White wines are led by chenin blanc, the most widely planted grape in the province, typically made dry and fruit-forward; sauvignon blanc gains tension and citrus and stone-fruit aromas in the cooler pockets, alongside chardonnay and semillon. Red wines range from structured cabernet sauvignon and merlot-based wines to Rhône-style blends built around syrah, as well as pinotage, a crossing developed in South Africa, marked by firm tannins and smoky notes. Cinsault and pinot noir round out the red palette, often in lighter, more approachable styles. The fresh whites suit fish and seafood, the structured reds pair with grilled meats and game, while pinotage matches smoked or spiced dishes.
