DOC Vinho Verde D.O.C. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Denominação de Origem Controlada

Vinho Verde D.O.C. lies in the far northwest of Portugal, in the historic Minho province, stretching from the Atlantic coast inland toward the Douro and Porto, bounded to the north by the Minho river, which forms the border with Spain. Delimited as early as 1908, it ranks among Europe's oldest wine regions and among Portugal's largest. It is divided into nine sub-regions, from Monção and Melgaço in the north to Baião and Paiva in the south, each shaped by its own microclimate. Soils are predominantly granitic, acidic and fertile, with alluvial deposits along the river valleys. The climate is strongly Atlantic, bringing humidity and abundant rainfall to the coast, while the interior sees colder winters and hotter summers. The white varieties Alvarinho, Loureiro, Arinto, Avesso and Trajadura grow alongside the red varieties Vinhão, Espadeiro and Borraçal.

The wines of this appellation

Vinho Verde produces mostly white wines, along with reds, rosés and, since the late 1990s, sparkling wines. The whites, made from Alvarinho, Loureiro, Arinto or Trajadura, are pale, lively and aromatic, with citrus and white-flower notes; many retain a light natural sparkle, known locally as agulha, from carbon dioxide released during malolactic fermentation. The reds, built mainly around Vinhão, show a deep garnet colour, firm tannins and a rustic character. The rosés, traditionally based on Espadeiro, are fresh and fruity. These wines are made to be drunk young, while their freshness and liveliness are at their peak, rather than for long ageing. The whites pair with grilled fish, seafood and salads; the reds suit rustic dishes and full-flavoured cheeses; the rosés and sparkling wines work well as an aperitif.
