Vin de Moldavie wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Moldova's vineyards extend across the whole of the Republic of Moldova, between the Nistru and Prut valleys, between Romania and Ukraine. The climate is temperate continental, softened by the influence of the Black Sea and sheltered by the Carpathian Mountains, which favours a wide diversity of grape varieties. Soils are dominated by chernozem, the fertile black earth typical of the region, especially present in the central part of the country. The vineyards are spread across four main growing areas: Bălți in the north, Codru in the centre, Ștefan Vodă and Purcari in the south-east, and Cahul in the south. Plantings combine old local varieties — fetească albă, fetească regală, fetească neagră and rară neagră — with international varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. This diversity of terroirs and grape varieties, carried by a winemaking tradition among the oldest in Europe, sets Moldovan viticulture apart from that of its Romanian and Ukrainian neighbours.

The wines of this appellation

Moldova's vineyards produce mainly white wines, dry or off-dry, alongside red, rosé and some sparkling wines. Whites made from fetească albă, fetească regală, chardonnay or sauvignon blanc stand out for their freshness and floral, fruity aromas, with higher alcohol levels typical of wines from the southern areas. Reds are built on the local varieties fetească neagră and rară neagră, as well as cabernet sauvignon, merlot and pinot noir. Fetească neagră gives wines with a rich bouquet marked by dark fruit and cherry, while rară neagră produces softer wines with notes of dried fruit and vanilla. The most structured reds have good ageing potential. At the table, the whites pair with fish, poultry and fresh cheeses, while the reds go well with red meats, slow-cooked dishes and game.
