Verona I.G.T. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

The Verona I.G.T. designation covers the entire territory of the province of Verona, in Veneto, stretching from the shores of Lake Garda in the west to the border of the province of Vicenza in the east. It runs from the first foothills of the Monti Lessini in the north down to the alluvial plains in the south, taking in both hillside and plain vineyards. The soils are of calcareous-dolomitic origin, combining volcanic basalt formations with morainic and river deposits. The climate, shielded to the north by the Lessini range and softened by the proximity of Lake Garda, shows a Mediterranean influence. The vineyards combine long-established native varieties — garganega and trebbiano di Soave for whites, corvina, corvinone, oseleta and rossignola for reds — with a wide range of international varieties such as chardonnay, pinot grigio, sauvignon, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. This varietal diversity sets Verona I.G.T. apart from the more narrowly defined controlled-origin appellations nearby, and allows for a broad range of varietal and blended wines.

The wines of this appellation

Verona I.G.T. produces white, red and rosé wines, each also made in a frizzante (lightly sparkling) version; reds are additionally made in a novello style. Whites range from straw yellow to a deeper yellow, sometimes with greenish tints, showing floral and fruity aromas, a fresh, saline palate and good structure. Reds show a more or less intense ruby colour, a vinous, fruity nose — cherry, sometimes rose — with spicy or herbaceous notes depending on the variety; on the palate they are full, harmonious, soft and moderately tannic, and the younger styles are best enjoyed for their freshness. Rosés, cherry-pink in colour, offer a floral, fruity nose and a fresh, lightly tannic palate. These wines suit a wide range of dishes: whites pair with antipasti, fish and risottos, rosés with cold cuts and summer fare, while reds go well with white meats, pasta in sauce and medium-aged cheeses.
