Indicazione geografica tipica

The Veneto IGT covers the entire administrative territory of seven provinces in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy: Belluno, Padua, Rovigo, Treviso, Venice, Verona and Vicenza. The territory stretches from the Alps and Dolomites in the north down to the plains, lagoons and Adriatic coastline, taking in a belt of hills and pre-Alpine foothills that includes the Colli Berici, the Colli Euganei and the Montello. The climate varies with altitude and proximity to water: cool in the mountains, milder on south-facing pre-Alpine slopes, warmer on the plain, and tempered near Lake Garda and the Adriatic Sea. This range of environments supports a wide array of grape varieties, native varieties such as corvina, corvinone, rondinella, garganega, glera and raboso alongside international varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, chardonnay and pinot grigio, with the list of authorised varieties differing from province to province. Unlike the more narrowly delimited DOC and DOCG appellations, Veneto IGT covers the whole regional territory.

The wines of this appellation

The Veneto designation covers white, red and rosé wines, produced still and, depending on the type, as frizzante (lightly sparkling), passito (made from dried grapes, for whites and reds) and novello for young reds. The label may carry the name of one or two grape varieties where they make up a sufficient share of the blend; wines labelled Cabernet may combine cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and carmenère. The very large number of authorised varieties, which differ from province to province, gives these wines an aromatic and flavour identity shaped chiefly by the grape variety or varieties used rather than by a single house style. The whites, fresh and lively, pair with fish, shellfish and as an aperitif. The rosés suit light dishes and cold cuts. The reds, from softer to fuller-bodied depending on the variety, go well with meat dishes and stews; novello wines are meant to be drunk young. Passito wines, rarer, are reserved for desserts.
