Tumbarumba wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Tumbarumba is a wine region in southern New South Wales, Australia, surrounding the small town of the same name on the western foothills of the Snowy Mountains. It belongs to the Southern New South Wales zone, alongside Gundagai, Hilltops and the Canberra District. The vineyards are planted at altitudes of roughly 300 to 800 metres, making it one of the coolest wine-growing areas in New South Wales. The soils, derived from decomposed granite, form free-draining sandy loams, with pockets of basalt in places. The climate is cool and bright, marked by strong sunshine, cold nights and a frost risk that calls for careful site selection. Chardonnay and pinot noir dominate the plantings by a wide margin. Part of the harvest is also sold to producers in neighbouring regions seeking the freshness typical of this mountain terroir.

Grape varieties: Vins rouges : cabernet-sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, syrah. Vins blancs : chardonnay, sémillon, riesling,  chenin, colombard, sauvignon

The wines of this appellation

Tumbarumba is known for sparkling wines made from chardonnay and pinot noir, valued for their finesse and lively acidity. Still wines also hold an important place: chardonnay yields elegant whites with fresh acidity, aromas of white peach and citrus, and a taut, mineral palate. Pinot noir produces light, delicate and fragrant reds with supple tannins, marked by red-fruit notes and a floral touch. These cool-climate wines stand out for their freshness and aromatic purity rather than power. The sparkling wines pair well with seafood, oysters and fish-based dishes. Still chardonnays suit poultry, grilled fish and fresh goat cheese, while the pinot noirs go well with salmon, duck and white meats.
