Trifilia wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

The Trifilia appellation lies in the southwestern Peloponnese, in the district of Messinia. It covers eight municipalities - Aetos, Avlona, Gargaliani, Dorio, Era, Kyparissia, Nestoras and Filiatra - together with the community of Tripyla. Vineyards are planted at altitudes ranging from 50 to 300 metres. Trifilia ranks among the most important winegrowing areas of Messinia, known for its long-standing tradition of growing international red varieties alongside local Greek grapes. Authorized white varieties are roditis, fileri, chardonnay, grenache blanc and ugni blanc. Authorized red varieties include agiorgitiko, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, carignan, grenache rouge, merlot, syrah and tempranillo. This combination of native and international varieties sets Trifilia apart from neighbouring appellations in Messinia.

The wines of this appellation

Trifilia produces white, rosé and red wines, made in dry, off-dry and medium-sweet styles. The whites, made from roditis, fileri, chardonnay, grenache blanc and ugni blanc, are fresh and fruit-forward, best enjoyed young. The rosés, made from roditis, fileri, grenache rouge and syrah, stand out for their lightness and easy-drinking character. The reds are built on a blend of Greek varieties such as agiorgitiko together with international grapes including cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, syrah, carignan, grenache rouge and tempranillo; they show a deep colour, dark-fruit aromas and firm tannic structure, with good ageing potential. The whites and rosés pair well with Mediterranean mezze, grilled fish and seafood, while the reds suit grilled meats, lamb and aged cheeses.
