Terre Siciliane I.G.T. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

The Terre Siciliane IGT covers the entire administrative territory of the Sicily region, making it the broadest denomination on the island. The terrain is predominantly hilly under a Mediterranean climate, and vineyards are planted on sites chosen for good sun exposure. This regional scale brings together a wide range of terroirs, from coastal areas to hilly inland zones. The production rules allow a very broad range of grape varieties, both historic Sicilian varieties such as grillo, catarratto, inzolia and nero d'Avola (calabrese), and international varieties such as chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah and pinot noir. This varietal and geographical breadth sets Terre Siciliane apart from Sicily's DOC appellations, which have more restricted production areas and permitted grape varieties.

The wines of this appellation

White, red and rosé wines are produced under this indication, mostly dry but also made, depending on color, in frizzante, sparkling, passito or late-harvest styles, as well as a novello style for reds. White wines, made from grapes such as grillo, catarratto and inzolia, are typically fresh, with citrus and white flower aromas, moderate acidity and a saline finish. Red wines, built around nero d'Avola (calabrese) or international varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah, show a deep color, supple tannins and notes of dark fruit and spice. Lighter styles are best drunk young, while more structured cuvées can age for a few years. White wines pair well with fish, shellfish and herb-driven Mediterranean dishes, while red wines suit grilled meats, slow-cooked dishes and aged cheeses.
