Štajerska Slovenija wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Štajerska Slovenija belongs to the Podravska (Drava Valley) wine region in the far northeast of Slovenia, near the borders with Austria and Hungary. It is the country's largest winegrowing district, covering approximately 5,400 hectares of vines. Its moderately cool continental climate results from the combined influence of the cooling Pohorje Hills to the west and the milder Pannonian Plain to the east. The soils are predominantly sandy clay, interspersed with marl and limestone, well suited to aromatic white varieties. Vineyards spread around well-known villages such as Ljutomer, Jeruzalem, Ormož, Maribor and Slovenske Konjice. Grape varieties grown include Sauvignon Blanc, Rhine Riesling, Furmint (locally known as Šipon), Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Traminer and Muscat. Within the Podravska region, Štajerska Slovenija stands apart from its neighbour Prekmurje, a smaller district more exposed to Pannonian influence.

The wines of this appellation

Štajerska Slovenija produces predominantly dry white wines, fresh and aromatic, shaped by the district's cool continental climate. Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Furmint yield pale-coloured wines with citrus, white flower and stone fruit aromas, carried by pronounced acidity that gives them good structure. Traminer and Muscat add floral and spicy notes, while Chardonnay and Pinot Gris produce fuller styles. Some producers also craft botrytis-affected and ice wines, with aromas of candied fruit and honey and real ageing potential. The dry whites pair well with fish, seafood and poultry in light sauces, as well as with fresh cheeses, while the sweeter cuvées suit foie gras or fruit-based desserts.
