South Eastern Australia wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

South Eastern Australia is the largest geographical indication in the Australian wine classification system, a broad zone that covers almost the entire wine-growing area of the country outside Western Australia. It encompasses the whole of the states of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory, and the southern and eastern parts of Queensland and South Australia. The zone stretches for around 2,000 kilometres, from the Pacific coast of Queensland to the Southern Ocean coast of South Australia. Across such an expanse, climate and soils vary considerably, from the cool, maritime conditions of Tasmania to the warm, continental climate of irrigated inland valleys such as the Murray-Darling and the Riverina. Grapes may be sourced from any region within this vast perimeter, provided that at least 85% of the volume genuinely comes from the claimed zone. This scale sets South Eastern Australia apart from more narrowly defined geographical indications such as Barossa Valley or Yarra Valley, which are reserved for specific terroirs.

Grape varieties: Vins rouges : cabernet-sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir, syrah. Vins blancs : chardonnay, sémillon, riesling,  chenin, colombard, sauvignon

The wines of this appellation

Wines bearing the South Eastern Australia indication are most often multi-region blends, designed to deliver a consistent style from one vintage to the next rather than express a single terroir. White wines most commonly combine chardonnay, semillon and sauvignon blanc, showing fruity profiles, crisp acidity and light or no oak influence. Red wines rely mainly on shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot, giving soft, fruit-forward wines with round tannins, generally intended for drinking in their early years. This category spans a wide quality range, from accessible entry-level wines to more elaborate blends drawing on several well-known regions. The whites pair well with poultry, fish and light dishes, while the reds suit grilled meats, slow-cooked dishes and semi-hard cheeses.
