D.O.C.

Sicilia D.O.C. covers the entire administrative territory of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, together with the archipelagos attached to it: the Aeolian, Egadi and Pelagie Islands, as well as Ustica and Pantelleria. The terrain is markedly varied: mountains in the north, hills across the centre, south and south-west, a plateau in the south-east, volcanic ground in the east around Mount Etna, and coastal plains along the shoreline. Soils follow this geological diversity, ranging from volcanic and limestone formations to clay-marl and crystalline ground. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, varies noticeably from one part of the island to another. Authorised grape varieties combine native and international types: catarratto, grillo, inzolia and grecanico for whites, nero d'avola, frappato, nerello mascalese and perricone for reds and rosés, alongside varieties such as chardonnay, sauvignon, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah. As a region-wide denomination, Sicilia D.O.C. spans the whole island, covering a broader territory than the more localised appellations found within it.

The wines of this appellation

The Sicilia D.O.C. denomination produces white, red and rosé wines, complemented by riserva versions of the reds, aged for at least two years before release, and by late-harvest wines made from withered grapes. White and rosé sparkling wines are also produced. Alongside these base styles, numerous varietal wines are made, requiring at least 85% of the grape variety stated on the label, whether Sicilian varieties such as nero d'avola, grillo or catarratto, or international ones such as chardonnay, syrah or cabernet sauvignon. The wines show harmonious, characterful aromas, with fruity, floral or vegetal notes typical of each variety, and a balanced structure of acidity, body and alcohol. Base wines are best enjoyed young, while the riserva, shaped by their longer ageing, are suited to further cellaring. Whites and rosés pair with fish and seafood, sparkling wines with the aperitif, reds with grilled or roasted meats and mature cheeses, and late-harvest wines with desserts or blue cheeses.
