Rheinhessen all sub-regions wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Qualitätwein

Rheinhessen is the largest of Germany's thirteen wine regions. It lies on the left bank of the Rhine, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, between Mainz, Worms and Bingen, covering close to 27,000 hectares of vines split into three districts: Bingen, Nierstein and Wonnegau. Often described as the "land of a thousand hills," its landscape alternates gentle slopes with orchards. Soils range from loess and marl-limestone, which dominate most of the vineyard, to the red slate river terraces of the Roter Hang between Nackenheim and Nierstein, and quartzite-slate soils around Bingen. Sheltered from wind and rain by the surrounding hills, the climate is among the driest and mildest in Germany, with warm summers and mild winters. White varieties account for most of the plantings, led by Riesling, followed by Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris, Silvaner and Pinot Blanc; Dornfelder, Pinot Noir and Portugieser complete the red-grape plantings.

The wines of this appellation

Rheinhessen produces mainly white wines, ranging from dry to off-dry, with some sweeter cuvées depending on grape ripeness. Riesling yields lively wines with citrus and stone-fruit aromas, carried by crisp acidity and good ageing potential. Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner give softer, floral wines with occasional herbal notes, while Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc bring more roundness and ripe-fruit character. Red wines made from Dornfelder, Pinot Noir and Portugieser are fruity, medium-bodied and soft-tanned; some barrel-aged Pinot Noirs gain extra structure with time. Dry whites pair well with fish, shellfish and asparagus, rounder or off-dry styles suit poultry or spiced dishes, and the reds accompany cold cuts or roasted white meats.
