DOC Prosecco D.O.C. Treviso wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Denominazione di Origine Controllata

Prosecco D.O.C. Treviso is a geographical mention within the Prosecco D.O.C. appellation, reserved for wines whose grapes are exclusively harvested, vinified and bottled within the province of Treviso, in Veneto. The wider Prosecco D.O.C. zone spans nine provinces across Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, but the Treviso mention sets apart wines produced entirely within this single territory. The soils are of alluvial origin, with a clay-loam texture and good drainage. The climate is temperate, shielded to the north by the Alps and tempered to the south by the influence of the Adriatic Sea; dry bora winds blow during ripening, supporting acidity and aromatic development in the grapes. Glera is the backbone of the blend, accounting for 85 to 100 percent, complemented by up to 15 percent of other varieties permitted within the zone: Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera Lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vinified as white.

The wines of this appellation

Prosecco D.O.C. Treviso is produced mainly in sparkling (spumante) and semi-sparkling (frizzante) versions, alongside a smaller still bottling, and it is also made as a rosé. The bubbles come from a second fermentation carried out in sealed tanks under the Martinotti method, also known as the Charmat method, which preserves the freshness of the fruit and yields wines with pronounced floral and fruity aromas. The colour is pale straw yellow, bright, with a fine, light mousse. The nose recalls green apple, pear and citrus, sometimes white flowers and peach. On the palate the attack is lively and the acidity crisp, dry and taut in the brut versions, rounder and more mellow in the extra dry versions. These are wines of immediacy, best enjoyed young to capture their aromatic brightness. They pair readily with aperitifs, antipasti, shellfish, light fish dishes and vegetable pasta.
