Mac Laren valley wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

McLaren Vale stretches along the Gulf St Vincent coastline, within the Fleurieu zone in South Australia, about forty kilometres south of Adelaide. It covers roughly 7,400 hectares of vines, running from Hallett Cove in the north down to the area around Sellicks Beach in the south, backed by the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The region shows remarkable geological diversity, with more than forty soil types recorded, including terra rossa over limestone, deep sands, clays, red-brown loams and pockets of ironstone. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers tempered by sea breezes off the gulf and mild winters carrying most of the annual rainfall. Red varieties dominate by far, led by shiraz, followed by cabernet sauvignon and grenache, often from old vines, while chardonnay remains the leading white variety. This soil diversity and coastal setting distinguish McLaren Vale from neighbouring regions such as the cooler, elevated Adelaide Hills and the more continental Barossa Valley.

Grape varieties: Vins rouges : cabernet-sauvignon, merlot, grenache, mourvèdre, syrah. Vins blancs : chardonnay, sémillon, riesling,  chenin, colombard, sauvignon

The wines of this appellation

McLaren Vale produces mainly powerful, full-bodied red wines. Shiraz shows a deep colour and aromas of ripe dark fruit, chocolate, pepper and spice, carried by dense tannins and good ageing potential. Grenache, often from old vines, stands out for its bright fruit, silky texture and notes of strawberry and garrigue herbs; it is frequently blended with shiraz and mourvèdre. Cabernet sauvignon adds tannic structure and blackcurrant notes. White wines are less common, built mainly around chardonnay along with Mediterranean varieties such as fiano and vermentino, giving fresh, aromatic wines. The most concentrated reds pair well with grilled or braised red meats, game and matured cheeses, while lighter cuvées suit cured meats. The white wines pair with grilled fish and seafood.
