The Lugana D.O.C. appellation lies on the southern shore of Lake Garda, straddling Lombardy and Veneto. It covers five municipalities: Sirmione, Desenzano del Garda, Lonato del Garda and Pozzolengo, in the province of Brescia, together with Peschiera del Garda, in the province of Verona. The vineyards occupy the morainic plain bordering the lake, on white, calcium-rich clay soils of glacial origin that are difficult to work but favour aromatic expression in the grapes. The climate benefits from the tempering influence of Lake Garda, which softens temperature swings and provides steady conditions through the growing season. The turbiana grape, also called trebbiano di Lugana and related to trebbiano di Soave, must account for at least 90% of the blend, with other white varieties suited to the area allowed to complete it. These dominant lacustrine clay soils set Lugana apart from neighbouring Lake Garda appellations.

Lugana D.O.C. is an exclusively white appellation, produced in several styles: the base Lugana, Superiore (aged at least twelve months), Riserva, Vendemmia Tardiva and Spumante. The colour ranges from straw yellow with greenish highlights to deeper gold with age. The nose shows floral notes, almond and citrus, sometimes with flint and hazelnut nuances. On the palate the wines are fresh, dry, soft and harmonious, with good salinity inherited from the clay-limestone soils. The base Lugana suits starters and fish dishes, particularly lake fish. The more structured Superiore pairs with elaborate pasta dishes and white meats. The Riserva, with more complex aromas from extended ageing, matches well with aged cheeses. The Spumante is suited to aperitifs and light starters.
