Lazio IGT covers the entire administrative territory of the Lazio region, spanning the five provinces of Rome, Viterbo, Frosinone, Latina and Rieti. This broad area brings together very different terroirs: volcanic zones around the Colli Albani, the Cimini mountains and Lake Bolsena, limestone hills in Ciociaria, the alluvial plain of the Agro Pontino, coastal stretches along the Tyrrhenian Sea, and inland Apennine areas. This diversity of soils and exposures sets the regional designation apart from Lazio's more narrowly defined appellations, allowing it to accommodate a wide range of native and international grape varieties. White varieties include Malvasia del Lazio, Bellone, Bombino Bianco, Grechetto and Trebbiano; red varieties include Cesanese, Nero Buono, Montepulciano, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

Lazio IGT produces white, rosé and red wines, as well as frizzante, spumante, passito and late-harvest versions; reds may also be made in the novello style. White wines, made mainly from Malvasia del Lazio, Bellone, Grechetto or Trebbiano, show a pale straw-yellow colour with floral and fruity aromas and a fresh, lively palate. Rosés favour lightness and immediacy, with notes of red berries. Reds, often made from Cesanese, Nero Buono, Montepulciano or international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, display a ruby colour with vinous, fruity aromas and a tannic structure ranging from soft to firmer depending on the blend. White and rosé wines pair readily with antipasti, fish and shellfish, while reds suit roasted meats, sauced pasta dishes and aged cheeses.
