DOC Langhe D.O.C. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Denominazione di Origine Controllata

The Langhe D.O.C. appellation spans 94 communes in the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont, across the hills overlooking the Tanaro river around Alba. The soils, of Tortonian origin, are made up of grey-blue marls, layered sands, limestone and clay, shaping low, rounded hills that are well exposed to the sun, at altitudes up to 800 metres. Established in 1994, Langhe D.O.C. stands out for its deliberately broad ampelographic base: it is the only appellation in the zone to bring together nearly all the grape varieties traditionally grown in the Langhe, rather than resting on a single variety. Red wines come from nebbiolo, barbera, dolcetto, freisa, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and pinot noir; white wines from arneis, chardonnay, favorita, riesling, nascetta, rossese bianco and sauvignon.

The wines of this appellation

Langhe D.O.C. produces a wide range of wines. The whites, made from arneis, chardonnay, favorita, riesling, sauvignon or nascetta, are pale straw yellow, sometimes with greenish hues, with a fine, characteristic nose and a dry, soft, fresh palate, occasionally with a hint of wood. The reds range from ruby to garnet: Langhe rosso and Langhe Nebbiolo show a vinous, intense nose and a dry, full-bodied palate with velvety tannins, while dolcetto and freisa are lighter and better suited to drinking young, on the fruit. A dry or off-dry rosé, velvety and harmonious, rounds out the range, alongside white and red passito wines made from dried grapes: golden to amber or deep ruby in colour, they are sweet, velvety and complex on the palate. The whites pair well with fish and starters, the reds with meat and cheese, the passito wines with desserts.
