AOC Grignan les Adhémar wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

The Grignan les Adhémar appellation covers 21 communes in the Drôme department, on the left bank of the Rhône, at the meeting point of the Dauphiné and Provence regions, between Montélimar and Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux. The vineyard lies across a landscape of hills where vines grow alongside lavender fields and truffle oaks. Soils are varied: rounded pebbles carried down by the Rhône, clay-limestone terraces at higher elevation, sandy and gravelly slopes, and alluvial terraces near the river. The climate is Mediterranean, shaped by the mistral wind and generous sunshine. Authorized red varieties are grenache and syrah, complemented by carignan, cinsault, mourvèdre and marselan. White wines are based on viognier, grenache blanc, marsanne and roussanne, rounded out by bourboulenc and clairette. The appellation was formerly known as Coteaux du Tricastin.

The wines of this appellation

Grignan les Adhémar produces red, rosé and white wines, with reds accounting for the largest share of production. Reds range in colour from bright ruby to dark red, sometimes with purple glints, showing aromas of spice, red and black berry fruit, liquorice and garrigue; syrah-dominant cuvées can age for up to about ten years. Rosés show a pale to light red hue, an elegant nose of fresh red fruit, a touch of freshness and good length on the palate; they are vinified from the same red varieties. Whites, pale yellow with golden highlights, are lively, bright and harmonious, marked by mineral and floral notes that gain in minerality with age. Reds pair well with grilled meats, lamb and game; rosés suit Provençal cuisine and grilled fish; whites match well with an aperitif, goat cheese and fish in sauce.
