AOC Gigondas wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

this area is situated in the southern part of the Rhône valley, in the village of Gigondas (Vaucluse). The soils are formed of stony alluvium rich in red clay, spread over rolling hills or huge terraces. The climate is Mediterranean, characterised by a distinctive period of drought in the summer and the fierce Mistral wind. The vines bask in 2,800 hours of sunshine every year. The wines are vinted traditionally at controlled temperatures. They undergo prolonged vatting and are aged in oak tuns. The red varietal range is comprehensive: Grenache noir, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Carignan, Terret noir, Counoise, Muscardin, Vaccarese, Camarese, Calitor and Picpoul noir.

Grape varieties: Vins rouges et rosés : syrah, grenache, mourvèdre, cinsault, carignan

The wines of this appellation

the Gigondas appellation produces red and rosé wines. The red wines are robust, well-balanced and powerful though can occasionally be slightly severe in their youth. They are usually wines with a long cellaring capacity, developing finesse and elegance over time. The aromatic range, predominantly red and black fruit and kirsch over the first few years, leads into wilder aromas of undergrowth and animal notes with age. The deeply-coloured rosé wines are heady and generous, although they reward early drinking. They display fragrances of almond and stewed fruit. The reds pair with wild boar stew and the rosés with duck gizzards salad.
