Cotești wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

The Cotești appellation lies on the southern slope of the Vrancea Subcarpathian foothills, east of the Carpathians, forming the southward continuation of the Panciu and Odobești vineyards, together known historically as the Vrancea vineyards. The vineyard forms a north-south band between the Milcov and Râmna valleys, stretching over 33 kilometres in length and 3 to 6 kilometres in width, across localities in Vrancea and Buzău counties. The soils combine piedmont sands and gravels covered by a loess-like clay-sandy mantle, overlying marine clay-sand-marl deposits. The climate is of the forest-steppe type, providing abundant sunshine and heat together with a rainfall pattern favourable to vine growth. The range of grape varieties is wide: the native white varieties Fetească albă and Fetească regală grow alongside Riesling, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Aligoté, while the reds include Fetească neagră, Băbească neagră, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah, complemented by aromatic varieties such as Tămâioasă românească and Busuioacă de Bohotin.

The wines of this appellation

The appellation produces white, rosé and red wines, along with aromatic and sparkling styles. The whites, made from Fetească albă, Fetească regală, Riesling, Sauvignon or Chardonnay, range from dry to sweet; they are fresh, with lively acidity and aromas of apple, flowers and sometimes tropical fruit. Tămâioasă românească yields sweet wines with a pronounced aromatic richness, dominated by rose in their youth and evolving with age toward musk, dried fruit and spice. The reds, made from Fetească neagră, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Cabernet Franc, show a deep, sometimes violet-tinged colour, aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant and forest fruit, firm tannic structure and good ageing potential. The dry, lively whites pair well with fish and seafood, the sweet wines suit desserts, while the structured reds accompany red meats and game.
