IGP Côtes du Tarn wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

I.G.P.

The Côtes du Tarn IGP covers the western half of the Tarn department in southwestern France, near Toulouse. The vineyard, whose origins trace back to Roman times, spans two distinct soil types: to the south, the hills of Cabanes, Lavaur and Graulhet, with stony, gravelly soils; to the north, the clay-limestone slopes of Campagnac and the limestone Cordais plateau. The climate combines oceanic and Mediterranean influences, with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers punctuated by storms. Red and rosé wines rely mainly on gamay and duras, complemented by fer servadou and syrah; white wines are made from sauvignon, mauzac and len de l'elh. Two communes, Cabanès and Cunac, may add their name to the appellation.

The wines of this appellation

Côtes du Tarn produces light, easy-drinking red wines with fruity and spicy aromas; their supple structure and gentle tannins make them best enjoyed young, served cool, alongside grilled meats, charcuterie or bistro fare. The rosés, light and charming, combine freshness with fruity, spicy notes; they suit composed salads, tapas and summer dishes. The dry whites, lively and aromatic, show floral notes and stone-fruit aromas such as peach and apricot; they pair well with grilled fish, shellfish and fresh goat cheese. The appellation also produces wines made from overripe grapes, with more evolved ripe-fruit aromas, best reserved for an aperitif or lightly sweet desserts.
