IGP Côtes de Gascogne wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

I.G.P.

The appellation lies in Gascony, between the Garonne river to the north, the Landes forest to the west and the Pyrenees to the south, on the same territory as Armagnac. It covers the entire Gers department together with parts of the Landes and Lot-et-Garonne departments. The climate is temperate oceanic, following a west-to-east gradient: a strong oceanic influence and regular rainfall toward the Landes side, a more continental tendency and summer drought toward the Gers side. Soils follow the same pattern, from tawny sands covered with loess in the west, giving sandy-loam soils locally called boulbènes, to clay-based molasse marked by limestone bands in the east, producing either deep clay soils known as terreforts or shallow, stony limestone soils known as peyrusquets. The grape varieties combine traditional Pyrenean foothill varieties such as colombard, gros manseng, petit manseng, tannat and cabernet franc with more widely grown varieties such as chardonnay, sauvignon and syrah.

The wines of this appellation

The appellation produces mostly white wines, both dry and off-dry, alongside rosés and reds, all marked by aromatic freshness. Dry whites show citrus and exotic fruit notes; the gros manseng and petit manseng varieties, picked overripe, also yield sweeter whites with ripe fruit aromas. Rosés are lively and fruity, while reds are light and crisp, marked by red and black fruit aromas. These wines are generally made for drinking young rather than extended cellaring. Dry whites suit aperitifs, seafood and summer dishes; sweet whites pair with foie gras, mature cheeses or fruit-based desserts; rosés and light reds go well with grilled dishes, charcuterie and white meats.
