Corinthia wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

The Corinthia appellation (Korinthos) covers the entire regional unit of Corinthia, in the northeastern Peloponnese, Greece. The vineyards lie between 200 and 850 metres above sea level, with the best plots found on hillside slopes. Soils and exposures vary considerably with altitude, giving the appellation a range of distinct terroirs. The climate is Mediterranean, with strong sunshine tempered by cooler conditions at higher elevations toward the end of the growing season. Permitted white varieties include roditis, moschofilero, savatiano, assyrtiko, lagorthi, malagousia, as well as chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Among reds, agiorgitiko predominates, alongside mavroudi, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah. Unlike the neighbouring Nemea appellation, which is reserved for pure agiorgitiko, Corinthia allows this local variety to be blended with international grapes, giving it a more diverse profile.

The wines of this appellation

The Corinthia appellation produces dry white, dry rosé and dry red wines. The reds are built around agiorgitiko, often blended with cabernet sauvignon, merlot or syrah. They show a deep colour, aromas of red and black cherry, plum and sweet spice, with soft tannins and balanced acidity that make them approachable young. Barrel-aged cuvées gain structure and complexity, developing notes of liquorice and dried fruit, with the ability to age for several years. The whites, made from native varieties such as assyrtiko, moschofilero and malagousia alongside chardonnay or sauvignon blanc, offer floral, citrus-driven aromatics with lively freshness. The rosés are fruity and easy-drinking, best enjoyed young. The reds pair well with grilled meats and lamb, while the whites and rosés suit fish, seafood and Mediterranean cuisine.
